Carlos: The Impact of Hope

Carlos: The Impact of Hope

   Katie Chatham
   24 September 2019

One of the most incredible things about hope is that when someone experiences it, the impact doesn’t stop with them. Hope that begins with one person can change entire families. That’s the story for Carlos and his family in Teupasenti, Honduras.

When asked to describe Carlos, his CarePoint facilitator said “he is very diligent and outgoing; he dreams of becoming a doctor.” To know the full weight of these words requires context for the life Carlos comes from and who he was before attending the CarePoint.

The community where Carlos lives is one marked by a high rate of violence and poverty. Hopelessness and suffering are normal ways of life for his neighbors. At home, he lives with his mother and stepfather who both have mental and physical delays. His two brothers were taken from his home because they could not be cared for properly. When Carlos first began attending the CarePoint, he was aggressive and harsh toward the other children and facilitators; reflecting what he saw in his home.

But, because of the hope found in a relationship with Jesus, Carlos’ story doesn’t end there! Psalm 9:9 says “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” Refuge is exactly what Carlos has experienced since attending the CarePoint. He has grown in his understanding of God’s Word through discipleship and understands that he has access to hope in the midst of his circumstances.  He is now outgoing and hopeful about the future!

Carlos’ mom has also been changed by hope. She has become a more sensitive mom and more willing to attend to the needs of her family and home. Together, they have begun to attend their local church.

Through sponsorship, Carlos and the other children in his community can continue to experience hope.
