We want to introduce you to Owethu and her story of life-change! This sweet girl has been attending our Mahushu CarePoint in South Africa since she was a preschooler. Her GoGo (grandmother) is one of our Bomake (cooking mothers), so Owethu has practically grown up at our CarePoint. Her mother is unemployed and struggles to provide for the family, so attending the CarePoint has provided her with necessary food.
Owethu has a unique story- she has special needs that inhibit her speech and educational development. Children with disabilities face more struggles than most, especially in countries without the proper resources. But, because of the support of the CarePoint and local Pastor, Owethu has been able to be enrolled in a school for children with special needs. This is a rare privilege for children in her position, but she is thriving and now attending 3rd grade!
After school each day, she is dropped off at the CarePoint to play with her friends and enjoy a nutritious meal. She is known for her big smiles, and has expressed a desire to be a teacher one day.
Thanks to the presence of the CarePoint in her life, Owethu receives unconditional love from the volunteers and other children, despite her disability. She has found a second home and an invaluable support system. This little life, and many others like her, have been changed because of partners like you!
Erica Harrington has been on the Children's Cup Sponsorship Team for 2 years. She is our Field Sponsorship and Systems Coordinator. Erica and her husband live in Clayton, North Carolina.
