We Found a Jewel in the Dominican Republic!

We Found a Jewel in the Dominican Republic!

   Dan Ohlerking
   December 6, 2021

The discovery of a jewel usually happens in a dirty, hard, dark place, and that’s what happened - we found Carlos!

Through the generosity of our partners, this year we purchased a mobile cargo vehicle for the delivery of food.  As a result, we were able to reach into two communities where we had not been able to go previously - serving meals, inviting children to get meals and teaching them about Jesus.

These communities are wracked with poverty. They’re more remote than most other communities we’ve been serving in, and there’s an over-abundance of hopelessness.

The first of these two communities, La Joya, is where we found a jewel! His name is Carlos - a six year old boy whose legs don’t work and who has difficulty using his arms. His mother died when he was born, and his father works in the city and is only home once a week. There’s a kind lady who cleans him up and makes sure he has food, but her help is limited because she is quite sick herself. From just about any perspective, one would think there’s little hope for Carlos.

But when our team showed up in La Joya (which in English means “the jewel”) and found Carlos, it changed everything. Lucia, the lady in charge of the new site always seeks him out and makes sure he is included. Now he is filled with hope. Carlos wants to play with other kids, but until now, this has been impossible because he has had no one else to take him anywhere. He has many difficulties but at the same time he has many dreams, and has a huge desire to move forward.

THIS is why we do what we do. There are so many jewels out there like Carlos.

Challenges have kept them from dreaming. There hasn’t been the help for them that they need.

But through your help we are finding these jewels, and showing them that not only are they noticed, but they are precious and God has a purpose for their lives.

We get to give Hope. Together we inspire them to dream. And all of it adds up to changing Carlos’ world and the worlds of thousands of kids like him.
